Everything You Need to Know About Weft Extensions (And How to Care for Them This Summer!)

At Blvd & Mane, we love helping our clients achieve the hair of their dreams, and weft extensions are one of our favorite ways to add luxurious length and volume. Whether you’re looking for a little extra glam for summer vacations or a full hair transformation, weft extensions are a fantastic option. In this post, we’ll walk you through how weft extensions are installed and share essential tips for keeping them looking flawless all summer long.

What Are Weft Extensions?

Weft extensions are sections of hair that are sewn or adhered together at the top (the “weft”) and left loose at the bottom. They come in a variety of textures, colors, and lengths to seamlessly blend with your natural hair.

There are different types of weft extensions, including machine-tied, hand-tied, and beaded wefts — and at Blvd & Mane, our specialists will help you choose the perfect match for your hair type and lifestyle.

How Weft Extensions Are Installed

Installing weft extensions is a professional process that ensures a natural look and healthy results. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect:

    1.    Consultation

First, you’ll meet with one of our stylists to choose the best type of hair and method for your needs.

    2.    Sectioning the Hair

On installation day, your stylist will carefully section your hair, creating a sturdy foundation for the wefts.

    3.    Creating an Anchor Row

A small, discreet beaded row is created close to the scalp. This will act as the anchor for your extensions.

    4.    Sewing in the Wefts

Using a special technique, the wefts are sewn onto the anchor row using thread that matches your hair color. The result is secure, natural-looking extensions that move freely with your hair.

The whole process typically takes a couple hours depending on how many rows are installed — but the gorgeous transformation is always worth it!

Summer Care Tips for Weft Extensions

Summer brings sunshine, beach days, and pool parties — but it also brings heat, humidity, and chlorine, all of which can be tough on your extensions. Here’s how to keep your wefts looking amazing all season long:

1. Keep Them Moisturized

Sun exposure and swimming can dry out both your natural hair and your extensions. Use a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and treat your hair with leave-in conditioners or hair oils, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

2. Protect Before Swimming

Before diving into a pool or the ocean, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner. This acts like a barrier and helps prevent chlorine or salt from soaking into your extensions.

3. Avoid Tight Hairstyles

Constantly pulling your hair into tight ponytails or buns can stress your anchor rows. Opt for loose, low styles when possible to prevent tension and breakage.

4. Brush Carefully

Use a wide-tooth comb or an extension-friendly brush to gently detangle your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up. Always support the base of your extensions while brushing to avoid tugging.

5. Limit Heat Styling

Embrace air-dried waves! If you do use heat tools, be sure to apply a heat protectant spray first. Extensions can be more vulnerable to heat damage, especially in the hot summer months.

6. Schedule Regular Maintenance

To keep your weft extensions looking perfect, you’ll need maintenance appointments every 6–8 weeks. This allows your stylist to move the wefts up and keep your natural hair healthy.
